Freelance SEO consultant, with the tradeoffs written down.
You get the person who does the work, and you pay less than an agency because there is no account layer to fund. You also give things up. This page tells you what they are, what it costs, and when you should hire somebody else instead.
What a freelance SEO consultant actually does
The short version: the person you hire is the person who does the work.
A freelance SEO consultant is an independent practitioner who takes on your search work directly, rather than an agency that sells you the work and then assigns it to whoever is available. That single difference explains most of what follows, including the parts that do not favour freelancers.
The job itself covers the same ground either way. What changes is who holds it.
That last one is the whole model. When you hire an seo freelancer you get one person’s judgement, one person’s calendar and one person’s capacity, with nobody in between translating your problem into a ticket. That is genuinely better for some businesses and genuinely worse for others, which is what the rest of this page is about. Anyone selling freelance seo services who tells you the model is simply better than an agency is selling, not advising.
Freelance, agency or in-house
Three models, each better at something different.
Most comparisons of this kind are written by whichever model the author sells, which is why they all reach the same conclusion. Here is the version I would give a friend, including the column where I lose.
| Freelance consultant | Agency | In-house hire | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who does the work | The person you spoke to on the first call | Usually a delivery team you meet later, not the person who won the account | Your employee, with outside specialists for the rest |
| What you are paying for | Seniority and directness | Capacity and coverage | Context and permanence |
| Capacity | One person’s week, and no bench behind them | Several workstreams at once without waiting | One person’s week, plus everything else they own |
| Cover when somebody is away | Planned holidays only, no cover for long absence | Somebody else picks it up the same day | Nobody, unless the team is more than one |
| Speed of a decision | One conversation | Three, and a change request | One, but it queues behind their other work |
| What you fund | The work | The work, the account layer, the office and the sales team | A salary, benefits, tooling and training |
| Procurement | An individual, which some organisations cannot contract | A company, with insurance and a framework | Internal headcount, which is its own approval |
| Best when | The work needs judgement more than volume | The plan needs several disciplines running in parallel | Search is central to the business and continuous |
Plenty of businesses use two of these at once, and there is nothing odd about that. I have worked alongside in-house teams as the specialist they call for technical work, and alongside agencies handling the content while I handled the structure. A freelance seo specialist slotting into an existing team is a normal arrangement rather than an admission that something went wrong.
When a freelancer is the wrong choice
The section every other page on this subject leaves out.
I read the pages currently ranking for this before writing mine. Not one of them says when you should not hire a freelancer, which tells you they were written to convert rather than to help. Here is where I would tell you to go elsewhere, and what to hire instead.
If two or more of those describe you, I would say so on the first call rather than take the work. I would rather lose an enquiry than take on something I cannot do properly, because the version where it goes badly costs us both more than the version where I said no.
What happens if I am ill, away, or you stop hearing from me
The fear nobody writing about freelancers will name.
This is the real objection behind most hesitation about hiring an individual, and it deserves a straight answer rather than reassurance. Four commitments, and one limit I cannot engineer around.
What the work has actually produced
Named clients, not anonymised screenshots.
Judgement is easy to claim and hard to show, so here are three engagements with the numbers attached and the clients named. Each one links to the full account of what was done.
None of that is a promise about your site. Different market, different starting point, different budget. It is evidence that the model works when the fit is right, which is the most any consultant can honestly offer before looking at your numbers. The full set is on the results page.
What freelance SEO costs
Published, because you should not have to book a call to find out.
Link placements are priced separately and published on my link building page, because buying links and buying strategy are different purchases and folding them into one number hides what you are actually paying for. You approve every placement and its cost before anything is spent.
I do not publish an hourly rate, and I would treat one as a warning sign elsewhere. Freelance seo rates quoted by the hour reward slowness, and they push clients into rationing questions to save money, which is precisely the moment the work goes wrong. A retainer means you can ask.
Where that sits in the market: freelancers commonly quote between a few hundred and a few thousand a month, and agency retainers usually start around where mine finish. Anything advertised under a few hundred a month is not a consultant’s time. It is automated output, or somebody carrying far too many clients to think about yours. Before you commit I will tell you what I think the realistic timeline is and what the first quarter should produce, and if the number does not make sense against what your site could plausibly earn, I will say so.
How to tell a good freelancer from a bad one
Use this on me too.
The barrier to calling yourself a freelance seo expert is a domain name, so the screening is on you. These are the six questions I would ask, including of me.
If a freelancer cannot answer those without hedging, the problem is not that they are inexperienced. It is that the answers would cost them the sale, which tells you what the engagement would be like once the invoice cleared.
How I work
What the first quarter actually looks like.
Across five years and thirty-plus projects that sequence has not changed much, because the order is what makes the work compound rather than the individual tactics. What changes is where a given site is starting from, and the first call is how we find that out.
