What is a technical SEO audit?

An SEO audit is a thorough health check of your website: a structured review of everything that affects whether, and how well, you rank in search. It looks at technical foundations, on-page content, site structure, and the signals that build authority, then pulls the findings into a single clear picture of what’s helping you, what’s hurting you, and where the biggest opportunities are.

The problem with most audits is that they’re generated by a tool and dumped on you as hundreds of undifferentiated issues, with no sense of which ones actually matter. Mine is the opposite. Yes, I use the best crawling and analysis tools, but the value is in the human judgment on top: knowing which issues move rankings, which are noise, and what sequence of fixes gets you results fastest.

Who needs a technical SEO audit?

An audit is the right first step if you recognise yourself here.

You cannot explain the underperformanceSome SEO has been done, the content is not obviously bad, and rankings still will not move. That combination almost always has a technical cause.
You are about to investYou want a baseline and a roadmap before committing budget to content or links, so the spend is aimed at something rather than everything.
Traffic dropped suddenlyAfter an update, a migration or a redesign, and you need to know what broke before deciding whether to roll it back or fix forward.
You inherited a site or an agency’s workAnd want an independent second opinion from somebody with no stake in defending the decisions already made.
You are about to scaleChecking foundations first means growth compounds rather than amplifying problems that were manageable at a tenth of the size.
You want a number you can trustAn honest starting position, so that whatever happens next can be measured against something real rather than a hopeful estimate.

What my technical SEO audit service covers

Four areas, tailored to your site rather than run from a fixed template.

01 / TechnicalTechnical healthCrawlability, indexing, architecture, redirects, canonicalisation, sitemaps, robots directives, speed, Core Web Vitals, mobile usability, HTTPS and structured data. This is where the biggest hidden ceilings usually live, and the technical SEO page has the full picture.
02 / On-pageOn-page and contentHow well pages target the right terms, the depth and quality of what is there, title and heading structure, internal linking, thin or duplicate pages, cannibalisation between pages competing for the same term, and gaps where content your audience searches for simply does not exist.
03 / Off-pageAuthority and backlinksThe strength and relevance of your profile, any toxic links dragging on it, and how all of that compares to whoever currently outranks you, so we know what catching them realistically takes. Where links turn out to be the constraint, link building is the follow-on work.
04 / DataAnalytics and trackingWhether analytics and Search Console are set up correctly, whether you are measuring what matters commercially, and whether past decisions rested on sound numbers. If the tracking is wrong, every decision built on it is wrong too.

What you actually get

A prioritised plan, not a data dump.

You get a ranked action plan: issues grouped by impact and effort, each explained in plain terms covering what it is, why it matters and exactly what to do about it. High-impact fixes come first, so even if you only action the top of the list you get most of the benefit. I walk you through it live as well, because the reasoning is the part that gets lost when a document is read alone.

If the audit finds your site is largely healthy and does not need much, I will tell you that plainly rather than inventing problems to justify a bigger project. It has happened, and it is a better outcome for both of us than the alternative.

How an SEO audit benefits your business

What changes the week after you have it.

Clarity and directionYou stop guessing and get an evidence-based plan for what to do next, in what order, and why that order.
Money spent where it countsFixing the right things first means budget goes to work that moves rankings rather than work that fills a report.
Quick wins uncoveredMost audits surface at least a few high-impact fixes that lift rankings without a single new page being written.
A benchmark to measure againstYou get a documented baseline, so future progress is measurable and arguments about it are settled by numbers.
Confidence before you investWhether you work with me afterwards or not, you will know your site’s real starting position rather than a hopeful one.
Something your team can executeWritten so a developer can act on it directly, which is what decides whether findings get fixed or filed.

How the audit works

Four steps, and you own the output whatever you decide next.

01
A short call about the businessYour goals, your history, what has already been tried and what happened. An audit run without that context finds technically true things that are commercially irrelevant.
02
The audit itselfThe full review across all four areas above, combining tool data with hands-on analysis. The tools find candidates. The analysis decides which of them are actually costing you something.
03
The prioritised plan and a live walkthroughDelivered within an agreed timeframe, then talked through properly so you can challenge the priorities and understand the reasoning rather than just inherit a ranked list.
04
Whatever you want to do nextImplement it yourself, hand it to your team, or have me carry out the fixes. There is no obligation either way, and if you would rather write your own next time, my SEO audit report template is the structure I use, free to fill in.

What makes an audit advanced rather than automated

The judgement is the deliverable. Everything before it is data collection.

Most of what gets sold as a technical SEO audit is a tool export. A crawler runs, produces a few hundred flagged issues sorted by colour, and the report is that export with a cover page on it. It tells you what is technically true and almost nothing about what matters. If you are comparing people to do this work, my guide to hiring a technical SEO expert sets out the six questions that separate a diagnosis from an export.

An advanced audit starts where the crawl finishes. The crawler tells me a page has four H1 tags. The audit works out whether that is why the page is not ranking, or an irrelevant detail sitting on top of a far bigger problem underneath. Deciding which of two hundred findings are the twelve that matter is the work you are paying for, and it is the part no tool does.

In practice every finding gets three things a tool cannot give it: an explanation of the actual consequence for your rankings or your revenue, an honest estimate of the effort to fix it, and a position in a queue. A list of three hundred issues is not a plan. A list of nine, in order, with the reasoning attached, is.

An audit is only as good as the judgement of whoever forms it, which makes who is doing it a fair thing to check before you commit. The freelance SEO consultant page explains why that judgement, rather than the crawl, is what you are actually paying for.

Technical SEO audits for SaaS and subscription businesses

Where a generic audit misses most of what is wrong.

SaaS sites break in ways brochure sites do not. The application usually sits on a subdomain or a separate stack from the marketing site, so crawl and indexing rules diverge in places nobody has looked at in a year. Trial and gated pages get indexed when they should not be. Integration directories, comparison pages and template galleries multiply faster than anyone audits them, and enough of them are thin to drag on everything else.

Then there is the part that is genuinely specific to SaaS: your highest-intent searches are comparison and alternative queries, and those pages often live outside whatever CMS the marketing team controls, rendered client-side and effectively invisible to search engines. A page that converts beautifully for the visitors who reach it is worth nothing if nothing can index it.

An audit for a SaaS business covers those first, because that is where the ranking ceiling actually sits. Everything on the standard technical SEO audit checklist still gets checked. It is just rarely the thing holding you back.

What audits have led to

Named clients, not anonymised screenshots.

An audit is only worth what gets fixed afterwards, so here are three engagements that began with one, with the numbers attached and the clients named.

“Adib is an SEO guru. Google recognised only 53 of our keywords when he started, after his work that’s 180 worldwide, with several already on page one. Easy to talk to, and he helps you understand his thinking.”Matt LivingstonCEO, Bacanale
“An absolute gem to collaborate with. Swift, thorough, and full of in-depth SEO insight, and he transparently shared every step of his process. I’d wholeheartedly recommend him and will hire him again.”Mirko ScarcellaCEO, Lion ADV Inc

Every site starts somewhere different, so none of that is a forecast. It is evidence that finding the right problems first is what makes the rest of the budget work.

What an audit costs

Published, because you should not have to book a call to find out.

A standalone audit is priced as a one-off project and quoted once I have looked at your site. If you want the findings implemented rather than handed over, that runs on the same monthly retainer as everything else.

Monthly retainer £1,500 – £5,000 per month, depending on scope and how competitive your market is. No hourly rate, no minimum term dressed up as a discount.
What the retainer covers
Strategy, and the reasoning behind it in writing The hands-on technical and on-page work Monthly reporting, including what did not work Direct access to me, not a support queue A working document of every change, yours to keep

Link placements are priced separately and published on my link building page, because buying links and buying strategy are different purchases and folding them into one number hides what you are actually paying for. You approve every placement and its cost before anything is spent.

Diagnosis or executionA first quarter weighted towards finding problems costs differently from a steady month of shipping fixes that are already agreed.
How contested your market isThe same result costs more where everyone else is also trying, because the bar for a page that holds its position is set by whoever is already there.
What your team can shipA client with a developer who can implement changes needs fewer of my hours than one where I am also the person editing the theme.

Three things move where you land in that range: how much of the work is diagnosis rather than ongoing execution, how contested your market is, and how much of the implementation your team can take on. I do not publish an hourly rate: quoting by the hour rewards slowness and pushes clients into rationing questions to save money, which is precisely the moment the work goes wrong. Before you commit I will tell you what I think the realistic timeline is and what the first quarter should produce, and if the number does not make sense against what your site could plausibly earn, I will say so.

Technical SEO audit FAQs

How long does an SEO audit take?
Most audits take 1-2 weeks depending on site size and complexity, followed by a live walkthrough of the findings.
Do I have to hire you to fix what the audit finds?
No. You get the full prioritised plan either way, implement it yourself, hand it to your team, or bring me in, entirely your call.
Will the audit include my competitors?
Yes, a comparison against the sites currently outranking you is a standard part of the off-page and authority section.
What is the difference between an SEO audit and a technical SEO audit?
A general SEO audit looks at content, keywords, links and technical health together. A technical SEO audit goes deep on the infrastructure layer only: crawling, indexing, rendering, site architecture, speed and structured data. If your content is already decent and rankings still will not move, the technical audit is usually the one that finds the reason.
Do you audit SaaS platforms and web applications?
Yes. Those audits cover the marketing site and the application boundary together, because the issues capping SaaS rankings usually sit exactly where the two meet: rendering, subdomain handling, and the quality of programmatically generated pages.
