What is local SEO?

Local SEO is the process of optimising your online presence so your business shows up when nearby customers search for what you offer. When someone types “plumber near me” or “best coffee shop in town,” Google decides in a fraction of a second which handful of businesses to show in the map pack and local results. Local SEO is the work that gets you into that handful.

It’s a different game from ordinary SEO. National rankings are about competing with the whole web; local rankings are about proving to Google that you’re a real, trusted, relevant business in a specific place. That means three things have to line up: relevance, distance, and prominence. My job is to strengthen all three.

Who needs local SEO?

Not every business, and I will tell you if yours is not one of them.

If your customers could reasonably ask who does this near me, local search is one of the highest-return places you can put a marketing budget. These are the businesses where it consistently pays.

Service businessesPlumbers, electricians, cleaners, landscapers, contractors and trades whose customers search locally and buy fast, often within the hour.
Clinics and practicesDentists, physios, salons, vets and health providers who rely on nearby patients and a steady flow of appointments.
Restaurants, cafes and shopsAnywhere foot traffic and near-me searches turn directly into revenue, and where the map pack decides who gets walked into.
Multi-location businessesFranchises or brands with several storefronts, each of which needs to rank in its own area rather than cannibalising the others.
Professional servicesAccountants, solicitors, agencies and consultants whose best leads come from local reputation rather than national search volume.
Not you, if you sell purely onlineWith no location tie there is nothing for the map pack to rank. You are better served by my eCommerce SEO or SEO strategy work instead.

How local SEO gets you ranked

Five signals, worked in a deliberate order: foundations first, then momentum.

There is no single switch. Local rankings come from a handful of signals working together, and skipping ahead to the interesting ones while the boring ones are broken is the most common way local budgets get wasted.

01
Google Business Profile, created and activatedYour profile is the single biggest lever in local search: it powers your listing in the map pack and on Maps. If you do not have one, I handle creation and activation, choosing the right primary and secondary categories, verifying ownership and completing every field Google uses to rank and display you. If you already have one, I audit and rebuild it: accurate name, address and phone number, precise service areas, correct hours, real photographs, products and services, and a description written for how people actually search. A fully optimised, active profile often moves faster than anything else we do.
02
Citations and name, address, phone consistencyA citation is anywhere online that lists your business name, address and phone number: directories, industry sites, local chambers. Google reads them as votes of confidence, but only where they agree with each other. One old address or mismatched number quietly confuses search engines and drags rankings down for months. I audit what exists, fix the contradictions, remove duplicates and build fresh listings only on the directories that matter for your industry and area. It is unglamorous, and it is frequently the difference between ranking fourth and ranking first.
03
Reviews that earn both rankings and callsReviews do double duty. They are a genuine ranking factor, and they are the thing that convinces a human to pick you over the listing above. A steady flow of recent, positive reviews tells Google you are prominent and trusted, and tells a customer they are safe to call. I set up a simple, repeatable system for earning them from happy customers, help you respond professionally to every one, and feed the language customers use back into your content. Over time it compounds into a moat competitors find hard to copy.
04
On-page and local contentYour website still decides a great deal. I optimise your service and location pages so each one clearly targets the searches your customers actually make, rather than the ones that sound impressive. For multi-location or multi-service businesses that means dedicated pages for each offering and each area, so you rank for considerably more than your homepage.
05
Local links and reputationProminence is reinforced by links and mentions from other trusted sites in your area: local news, community organisations, suppliers, sponsorships. I focus on earning those the right way. Never the spam directories that look like progress on a report and cost you later.
Foundations before flash. I will not chase links while your Google Business Profile is half-built or your citations contradict each other, because everything built on top of a broken foundation has to be built twice.

How local SEO benefits your business

What actually changes once the signals line up.

Done properly, local SEO is one of the few channels where the leads keep arriving long after the work is done, because the assets you build stay built.

Ready-to-buy leadsSomebody searching near me has already decided to buy and is choosing who from. That is a fundamentally different visitor from one reading a blog post.
The map pack advantageThe top three local results take the overwhelming share of clicks and calls. Fourth place on a map is close to invisible.
Falling cost per leadUnlike ads, which stop the moment you stop paying, local rankings keep producing, so the cost of each lead drops the longer the work has been running.
Trust before the first callStrong reviews and a complete, active profile make you the obvious safe choice before anybody has spoken to you.
A durable edgeCitations, reviews and local reputation compound. The longer they are built, the harder and slower you are to displace.
Coverage you can extendOnce one area ranks, the same structure can be repeated for the next one, which is how multi-location businesses grow without multiplying the spend.

How I work as your local SEO consultant

What the first month looks like.

Every engagement starts with a full local audit: your profile, your citations, your reviews, your competitors and your site. What comes back is a prioritised plan with honest timelines and the reasoning attached, so you can disagree with any part of it before the work starts.

Then I do the work and report on it monthly, in language you can follow, covering what changed, what moved and what did not. No lock-in, no vanity dashboards, and no promises about positions nobody controls. If I think your budget would do more somewhere other than search, I will tell you on the first call rather than after the first invoice.

If you would rather know who you are hiring before that call, my background is here. And if you are still weighing one person against an agency, the freelance SEO consultant page sets out both sides, including the cases where I would tell you to hire the agency.

What local SEO work has produced

Named clients, not anonymised screenshots.

Local rankings are easy to promise and easy to check, so here are three engagements with the numbers attached and the clients named. Each one links to the full account of what was done.

“Adib is an SEO guru. Google recognised only 53 of our keywords when he started, after his work that’s 180 worldwide, with several already on page one. Easy to talk to, and he helps you understand his thinking.”Matt LivingstonCEO, Bacanale
“An absolute gem to collaborate with. Swift, thorough, and full of in-depth SEO insight, and he transparently shared every step of his process. I’d wholeheartedly recommend him and will hire him again.”Mirko ScarcellaCEO, Lion ADV Inc

Your market, your competitors and your starting point are all different, so none of that is a forecast. It is evidence that the method works where the fit is right, which is what the first call is for.

What local SEO costs

Published, because you should not have to book a call to find out.

Local work usually sits at the lower end of the range, because the competitor set is smaller and the winnable ground is narrower than a national campaign.

Monthly retainer £1,500 – £5,000 per month, depending on scope and how competitive your market is. No hourly rate, no minimum term dressed up as a discount.
What the retainer covers
Strategy, and the reasoning behind it in writing The hands-on technical and on-page work Monthly reporting, including what did not work Direct access to me, not a support queue A working document of every change, yours to keep

Link placements are priced separately and published on my link building page, because buying links and buying strategy are different purchases and folding them into one number hides what you are actually paying for. You approve every placement and its cost before anything is spent.

Diagnosis or executionA first quarter weighted towards finding problems costs differently from a steady month of shipping fixes that are already agreed.
How contested your market isThe same result costs more where everyone else is also trying, because the bar for a page that holds its position is set by whoever is already there.
What your team can shipA client with a developer who can implement changes needs fewer of my hours than one where I am also the person editing the theme.

Three things move where you land in that range: how much of the work is diagnosis rather than ongoing execution, how contested your area is, and how much your own team can implement. I do not publish an hourly rate: quoting by the hour rewards slowness and pushes clients into rationing questions to save money, which is precisely the moment the work goes wrong. Before you commit I will tell you what I think the realistic timeline is and what the first quarter should produce, and if the number does not make sense against what your site could plausibly earn, I will say so.

Local SEO FAQs

How long does local SEO take to show results?
Most businesses see movement in the map pack within 6-10 weeks, especially if your Google Business Profile was incomplete before. Full local dominance for competitive terms typically takes 4-6 months.
Do I need a physical storefront for local SEO?
No. Service-area businesses without a public storefront can still rank in the map pack using a properly configured Google Business Profile with a hidden address and defined service areas.
Can you help with multiple locations?
Yes. Multi-location and franchise local SEO is one of my core services, each location gets its own optimised profile, citations, and landing page.
What if I already have a Google Business Profile?
I’ll audit it first. Most existing profiles have gaps, wrong categories, incomplete fields, no photos, that are quietly costing rankings. We fix those before doing anything else.
