Shopify SEO Checklist

Forty-five checks written for Shopify specifically, not general SEO advice with the word Shopify added. Most of them exist because of a decision the platform made for you. Tick them off and the page scores your store, names your weakest area, and tells you what to fix first. Your progress saves in this browser.

Progress0%0 of 45

How to use this: work top to bottom the first time. The order is deliberate. An indexing problem makes every check below it academic, and a duplication problem makes your collection and product work count for less than it should.

If a check fails, note it and keep going. Diagnose the whole store first, then fix in order of impact. Fixing as you go is how a Shopify audit takes three weeks and moves nothing. When you are done, the SEO audit report template turns your notes into something a client or a developer can act on.

Store setup and indexing

Whether search engines can reach your store at all, and only your store.

URL structure and duplication

The section that exists entirely because of how Shopify builds URLs.

Collection pages

The biggest missed opportunity on almost every store.

Product pages

Where duplicate content and abandoned products quietly accumulate.

Theme and speed

Shopify’s hosting is fast. Themes carrying fifteen apps are not.

Apps

The most common cause of a slow Shopify store, and the least examined.

Structured data

What machines read about your products, which now matters twice.

Internal linking and navigation

How authority reaches the pages that earn.

Content and measurement

Whether any of the above is actually paying you.

Rather have someone run it on your store?

A checklist tells you what to look at. It cannot tell you which six of the forty-five failures are actually costing you sales, or which ones are safe to leave. That judgement is what a Shopify SEO consultant is for.

Questions about this checklist

Is Shopify actually bad for SEO?

No. Hosting is fast, HTTPS and mobile are handled, and the basics work out of the box. What it does is make decisions for you, and most of this list exists because of those decisions rather than because of anything you did wrong. Working within the constraints beats fighting them.

Do I need an SEO app to fix these?

Mostly not, and on several of these the app is the cause rather than the cure. Duplicate structured data and orphaned scripts both come from apps far more often than from themes. Fix the structural items first and see what is left before installing anything.

How is this different from a general SEO checklist?

Almost every check here is Shopify-specific. Collection-scoped product URLs, the automatic all-products collection, tag filtering, robots.txt.liquid and theme app weight do not appear on a generic list because they do not exist outside Shopify. If you want the platform-agnostic half as well, the technical SEO audit checklist covers it.

Which check should I do first if I only do one?

Look at whether your theme links products through collection paths. It is quiet, it is on a large share of stores, and it splits the signals on every product you sell. Nothing else on this list has that reach for so little work.

Does this work for Shopify Plus?

Yes, and Plus adds a few of its own. Multiple storefronts and regional markets duplicate a catalogue in ways a standard plan cannot, so check five in the first section matters more, not less, the bigger you get.
